Have a happy and safe Fourth of July!

Tomorrow, we celebrate America’s independence when we celebrate the Fourth of July. This holiday, just like any other, comes with risks as much as it comes with fun. In order to avoid any unnecessary dangers, here are some safety tips from experts such as ADT, American Red Cross, and the National Safety Council.

Use Immense Precaution When it Comes to Fireworks

In Fresno County, fireworks known as “safe and sane” fireworks are allowed to be set off during the Fourth of July. However, many will still try to use the illegal fireworks that are incredibly dangerous. If you are caught using non-California certified safe and sane fireworks, there will be a hefty fine.

Still, when handling fireworks of any type, many things could go wrong. Be sure to stand back and have the crowd standing away as well. Do not ever point fireworks or sparklers at yourself or others. Keep the area clear of fire hazards, only lighting fireworks on the ground in a fire resistant area. Remember, never relight malfunctioning fireworks. If they do not work, leave them be. Have safety precautions, such as a hose, buckets of water, or a fire extinguisher at the ready in case a fire lights.

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to go to a professional show. There are lots in the Fresno area, which you can find listed here.

Stay Hydrated

The Fourth of July is often a very hot day, and this year is looking like it will continue the trend. Be sure to stay hydrated and be aware of the heat. If you plan to spend the day outdoors, have plenty of shading available and drink plenty of water. Furthermore, load up on sunscreen to avoid being burnt due to overexposure to the sun. If possible, try to plan your day so that you can have some time spent indoors with air conditioning. In addition to water, incorporate electrolytes to ensure proper hydration.

Be Careful With Sparklers

Many people think sparklers are a harmless way to enjoy some light up action on the Fourth of July. However, these are actually much more dangerous than many think. These sticks burn at about 2,000 degrees. This is a temperature that is hot enough to burn even some metals. The flame can spread quickly and easily when misused, making it hard to put out if it does spread. Studies showed that in 2022, 29% of firework injuries in children 5 and under were caused by sparklers. Be very careful and ensure no child is using these items unattended.

Protect Your Pets

Fireworks and other parts of Fourth of July celebrations can actually be quite disruptive for animals. If you have pets, please be sure to keep them in a safe, calming environment in case fireworks go off in your area and causes distress to your pet. Keep an eye on them during the day as well and ensure they are staying hydrated, as animals can easily overheat in the summer as well.

We hope you all have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July!
